Marriage Rules in the Bible

Marriage can be an emotional, lifelong commitment between two individuals that has many varying opinions about how it should occur. Some believe a couple should simply start living together without any formal ceremony or commitment; others argue it must be celebrated through special rituals; finally the Bible provides guidance as to how a couple should approach marriage and the commitment it requires.

One of the core principles of biblical marriage is for husbands to love their wives as Christ loves His Church, leading their home with godly values while encouraging spiritual and moral development in their wives. Furthermore, husbands should treat their wives with respect and dignity. Wives should submit themselves submissively but should avoid humiliation.

A husband should never cheat on his wife and should never seek other women as lovers or concubines. Furthermore, married women should keep any secrets regarding her husband or household from others and refrain from disclosing anything that would compromise him as a husband in any form or capacity. Furthermore, according to Scripture men should never leverage their status as husband to gain any advantage either at work or other places of life.

If a married woman becomes pregnant, she must immediately inform her husband. Additionally, husbands cannot give gifts that would be inappropriate for someone other than their partner and the Bible warns against using his position as father to covet his children’s belongings or force their spouse to stay home with him.

The Bible also provides other rules regarding marriage that outline additional regulations. Chapter 18 contains seventeen laws outlining those with whom sexual relations should not take place; these prohibitions do not reflect each relationship status equally; for instance, paternal aunts (father’s brother’s wives) cannot be seduced by men while maternal aunts can.

If a couple decides to marry, it is necessary for both of them to take their decision seriously and discuss what type of commitment each wishes to make. They should also carefully consider one another’s families and friends in order to make sure that long-term compatibility exists between them. Step one of creating a happy and successful marriage lies in increasing its odds. Agreeing on housekeeping issues such as how tidy their house should remain or whether or not pets should be owned is also key. Before entering into marriage, couples should agree upon these matters to ensure a smooth and less-stressful transition. Furthermore, couples should find ways to express their affection regularly – for instance writing letters to each other or scheduling dates without children.
