Genesis 24’s tale of Isaac and Rebekah offers us several valuable lessons. First, it shows how we can rely on God for all our needs when we trust in Him alone. Second, it emphasizes the value of focusing on inner beauty rather than outward appearance when viewing individuals as Godly people. Thirdly, faithful marriage will bring blessings from above while fourthly it stresses how important it is to express gratitude when He provides for us.
Genesis 24 opens with Abraham sending one of his trusted servants into Mesopotamia – land of their ancestors – with instructions not to select any woman from Sarah’s family for Isaac as his bride (24:57-58)
(2) Isaac ordered his servant to bring her back home (v. 65). To accomplish this task, they proposed praying to God and suggesting an indicator. They asked a particular woman at a well for water; if she responded by offering to drink as well as his camels then this should be their chosen bride; in response to which God blessed them both by providing an Isaac wife that met both criteria!
One reason Rebekah appealed to Isaac was her willingness to forsake her family, culture, and land behind. Isaac understood this act of dedication towards him as evidenced by her wearing a veil symbolizing modesty (24:57-58)
Once Rebekah arrived with Isaac’s servant, they brought her into their tent and placed her aside – this act signalled to Isaac that they were betrothed, as it ensured no other men had access to Rebekah before Isaac saw her. Rebekah then covered herself up by veiling herself – perhaps according to ancient Assyrian tradition for elite women – before dismounting from her camel and disembarking from its journey back home.
Rebekah met her future husband with great delight when she entered the tent (Genesis 24:66). This passage indicates that Rebekah participated in negotiations for their marriage with full consent.
Isaac loved Rebekah, and she reciprocated his affection. However, she had one condition before agreeing to marry Isaac: she must become pregnant (vv. 67).
Rebekah had been struggling to conceive for twenty years despite Isaac’s best efforts, but to no avail. Isaac may have grown bitter but Rebekah kept trusting in God’s promises and waiting on His timing.
At exactly the right moment, God answered Rebekah’s prayer by helping her conceive twins – one with red hair like an armband named Esau and another brown baby called Jacob – both representing blessings from Him to all nations of earth. It was His way of showing how each nation would contribute positively.
